Overview

This 2-day  course aims to enhance participant’s understanding of Eurocode provisions for the analysis and design of steel strutting system for earth retaining and stabilizing structures (ERSS) so that they could apply design principles and standards in accordance with Eurocodes and Singapore National Annexes in the design of steel strutting system and its component for ERSS and avoiding common mistakes in design with lessons learned from case studies and collapse investigation. Analysis and design principles related to soil-structure interaction in the ERSS will also be discussed using modern tools such as finite element analysis so that participants could implement Eurocode 7 design philosophy and appreciate the possibilities and limitations of such modern tools.

  • Limit state design principles in geotechnical design of ERSS system
  • Various types of ERSS systems and its associated risks
  • Appraise ground conditions and select geotechnical characteristic values for design
  • Fundamental stability checks for deep excavation
  • Geotechnical finite element analysis of ERSS system
  • Concept of one-strut failure in ERSS system with multi-level props
  • Ground movements and building damage assessment

Structural Design of Steel Strutting System for ERSS
  • Basic structural requirements for steel strutting systems in ERSS
  • Design of walers, struts, kingposts, bracings and ties
  • Basic design concepts for joints and connections in steel strutting systems
  • Material and quality assurance requirements in BC1
  • Traceability and reusability requirements for steel strutting systems using BC1
  • Case studies and collapse investigations
  • Interlock efficiency design concept for steel sheet-pile in EC3-5 piling
  • Difference in sheet-pile design between EC3-5 and BS5950

Hands-on Session
  • Geotechnical analysis of ERSS system using FEM
  • Structural analysis and design of steel strutting system for ERSS

SkillsFuture Funding

To be eligible for the 70% training grant awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1. Be a Singaporean Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident
  2. Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy

To be eligible for the 90% enhanced subsidy awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1. Be a Singaporean Citizen
  2. Be at least 40 years old
  3. Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SIT reserves the right to collect the balance of the programme fees (i.e. the potential grant amount) directly from the applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) should the above requirements not be fulfilled.
