Understanding of human motor control and learning requires a solid foundation of observation of human movement. In addition to clinical measures used in day-to-day clinical practice, high resolution, objective, and precise measures can add great values in screening for clinical practice. An in-depth understanding of human movement provides tremendous value in evaluating the functional performance of limbs under normal and abnormal conditions, as well as proper diagnosis and treatment outcome of high-stake intervention and design of prosthetic devices to restore function.

Human movement can be described in terms of kinematics and kinetics. Kinematic analysis measures the form of human movement, e.g. location, speed, or acceleration of body segments. Kinetic analysis measures the force that impacts on the human body. Electromyography (EMG) analysis complements kinematic and kinetic analyses by detecting muscle activities that drive human movement.

This two-day workshop will focus on the application of motor control and learning through state-of-the-art equipment to perform kinematic, kinetic, and EMG analysis. Participants will have the opportunity to propose and conduct an experimental design of their own interest to address questions inspired by clinical practice.

    • Pre-data collection setup: e.g. marker placement, system calibration, camera placement, masking environmental noise
    • During data collection: e.g. data quality check

  2. Kinetic analysis via Kistler system
    • Pre-data collection setup
    • During data collection: e.g. data quality check
    • Post-data collection: e.g. data export, data processing, data analysis
  3. Electromyography (EMG) analysis via Delsys system
    • Pre-data collection setup: e.g. skin preparation, electrode placement
    • During data collection: e.g. data quality check
    • Post-data collection: e.g. data export, data processing, data analysis

Prerequisite

  • Knowlege in human anatomy and biomechanics
  • Basic skills in using excel

SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy

To be eligible for the 90% enhanced subsidy awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:

  1. Be a Singaporean Citizen
  2. Be at least 40 years old
  3. Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SIT reserves the right to collect the balance of the programme fees (i.e. the potential grant amount) directly from the applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) should the above requirements not be fulfilled.
