Overview

This 2-day workshop is designed to develop advanced knowledge and competencies in the older adult. The speakers will present concepts relating to the ageing population, senescence, primary versus secondary ageing and effects of immobility with emphasis on the musculoskeletal system. The benefits of physical activity and exercise as preventative and therapeutic strategies will be incorporated with insight into rehabilitation for a variety of medical, post-surgical, and biopsychosocial conditions encountered in the ageing patients. Rehabilitation strategies will emphasize interprofessional practice, so critically needed for effective geriatric rehabilitation. Examination of the aging adult will address interviewing, tests and measures and considerations of special situations such as fall risk, osteoporosis, mental health conditions, Parkinson’s disease, and geriatric syndrome.
