Overview

Database plays an essential role in almost all areas where computers are used in modern society. When people deposit or withdraw funds, make airline reservations, and enroll to university courses, they will interact with databases to retrieve, record, or update their data. Data fuels information systems to work properly and generate relevant output for data analytics. Designing and managing database is, therefore, of critical in data analytics. Improper database design will likely impact on the inaccurate and irrelevant analysis. Further, personal data stored in the database required careful attention and comply with relevant jurisdictional regulations.

This 2-day workshop will equip participants with the system thinking to understand how the real-world activities are represented in database. Participants will then be guided to design data model and develop physical database using popular database management systems. Participants are also facilitated to be aware of and comply with data protection related requirements when working with personal data. Multiple case studies are used to help participants fully comprehend on the database management and data protection issues.

System and Representational Model Concept Understand the system thinking to generate database design that are faithful representations of the focal real-world phenomena.
Conceptual Foundation of Relational Model Learn the conceptual foundation of the relational model, the meaning and importance of primary keys, foreign keys, and related terminology.
Data Modelling Learn the basic stages of database development. Understand the purpose and role of a data model and practice on how to create an E-R diagram from source documents.
Transforming Data Models into Database Design Apply how to transform E-R data models into relational designs and a process for normalizing relations.
Structured Query Language (SQL) Learn and apply SQL statements for database administration.
Data Protection and Privacy Understand the general rules of data protection and privacy when working with personal data processing.

SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy

To be eligible for the 90% enhanced subsidy awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1.  Be a Singaporean Citizen
  2.  Be at least 40 years old
  3.  Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme
