SITizens Learning Credits

Overview

This module aims to provide participants with the in-depth knowledge of the different power quality and reliability problems commonly encountered in power system network and their effects on the networks. Participants will also learn about the different technologies that are used by the power industry to mitigate power quality and reliability problems. The theories taught in the lecture will be complemented by hands-on practice using industrial standard computer-aided engineering software such as ETAP. Techniques on the analysis of real-world power quality and reliability problems are also emphasised in this module.

What You’ll Learn

Concept of Power Quality and Reliability (PQR)
  • Causes of PQR problems; power quality versus reliability; PQR terms and definitions, power quality standards.
Voltage Fluctuations and Variations
  • Overvoltages, voltage sag caused by starting of induction motor, switching of reactive compensation devices in power systems, fault induced voltage sags, power system reliability indicators including SAIFI, SAIDI, SARFI.
Harmonic Distortions
  • Significance of harmonic distortions, Fourier series and analysis, harmonic indices, harmonic sources, effects of harmonics, system voltage harmonics, harmonic currents, interharmonics, modelling of harmonic voltage and current sources in ETAP, harmonic load flow study in ETAP.
Power Quality and Reliability Improvement Techniques
  • Power conditioning equipment such as UPS, DVRs, SVCs and STATCOMS, grounding, power quality surveys, power quality monitoring, power quality measuring tools, motor starting methods, harmonic filter selection in ETAP.

Prerequisites

  • Bachelor degree in Engineering
  • At least one-year of relevant working experience
 

Certificate and Assessment

A Certificate of Participation will be issued to participants who
  • Attend 75% of the workshop.
  • Undertake the Continuous Assessment

A Certificate of Attainment will be issued to participants who:
  • Attend at least 75% of the programme, and
  • Participants who pass the Continuous Assessment and Exam Paper will earn 6 ECTS credits, which are stackable for PGCert or MSc qualifications.

SkillsFuture Funding


To be eligible for the 70% training grant awarded by SkillsFuture, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1.  Be a Singaporean Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident
  2.  Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy

To be eligible for the 90% enhanced subsidy awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1.  Be a Singaporean Citizen
  2.  Be at least 40 years old
  3.  Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme
SIT reserves the right to collect the balance of the programme fees (i.e. the potential grant amount) directly from the applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) should the above requirements not be fulfilled.

These modules are stackable towards a Postgraduate Certificate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (PGCert EEE) or can be taken individually as a single module as follows:

  • EEE6001 Power Systems Analysis and Control
  • EEE6002 Power Electronic Conversion
  • EEE6003 Electrification for Transportation and Built Environment
  • EEE6004 Power Systems Fault Analysis and Protection
  • EEE6005 Power Quality and Reliability
  • EEE6006 Smart Grids and Cyber Security
  • EEE6007 Analysis and Design of Electrical Machine Systems
  • EEE6008 Condition Monitoring in Power Engineering
  • EEE6009 Energy Resources, Market and Economics
  • EEE6010 Professional Practices in Power Engineering

Each module carries 6 ECTS credits which are stackable for graduate qualification of PGCert EEE. Candidates who pass any of the above 4 modules (totalling 24 credits) with a CGPA of 2.5 or more will be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (PGCert EEE) by SIT. All the above modules are subsidised by SkillsFuture Singapore. Eligible individual may enjoy up to a maximum of 5 subsidised modules.

The above modules have been renamed from EPE60XX to EEE60XX for modules starting from Sep 2019. There is otherwise no change in stackability towards the Postgraduate Certificate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (PGCert EEE)
