Overview

Managers from all areas of a business are required to make decisions which impact on the business’s value. As a first principle course, this module aims to provide students with a basic understanding of finance theory and the ability to apply that theory when making these financial decisions in an uncertain environment.

In particular, the study of finance involves three inter-related areas:
  1. Money and capital markets;
  2. Investment finance; and
  3. Corporate finance
In sum, topics covered in this module include: the basic concepts of financial mathematics; investment evaluation techniques; capital budgeting; sources and valuation of both debt and equity securities; risk and return relationships; diversification and portfolio theory.
