Overview




This course is in collaboration with Thermo Fisher Scientific.

In the past 15 years, mammalian cell culture production processes have moved from the use of glass and stainless-steel bioreactors to disposable, single use bioreactor systems. Thermo Fisher Scientific’s HyPerforma SUB systems, with scalable volumes ranging from 50L – 2000L is designed using traditional stainless-steel bioreactor principles to ensure optimal cell culture performance. 

In this 2-day course, the following topics will be covered:
1. Fundamentals of Single Use Technology (SUT)
2. Sensors technology, assemblies and film material
3. Mammalian cell expansion and scale up
4. Different modes of bioreactor operation
5. Installation, calibration and use of HyPerforma SUB

At the end of the course, participants will be fully equipped with the relevant skillsets to be part of the operations arm of the biomanufacturing industry.

Teaching Team

What You’ll Learn

Theory module:

1. Fundamentals of Single Use Technology (SUT)
  • Introduction to SUT and its applications
  • Understand the major differences between SUT and conventional processes in terms of logistics, cost, turnaround time and operation
2. Sensors technology, assemblies and film material
  • Understand the function of each components associated with SUT
  • Assembly and operation of single use bioreactor systems
3. Cell expansion and scale up
  • Understand major culture scale up challenges and criteria in terms of media requirement, O2 supply, pH control and mixing
  • Determine operating condition at large scale culture using empirical data from lab and pilot scale
4. Batch, fed batch and perfusion culture
  • Understand different culture modes and their applications
  • Determine yield, productivity and cost analysis of bioprocess

Practical module:

1. Bioreactor bag installation
  • Handling, fitting into holder, inflating and connection assembly
2. Integrity testing
  • Using integrity tester
3. Aseptic transfer
  • Test run using water, inoculation and sampling
4. Calibration of sensors
  • Dissolve oxygen, pH and pump calibration
5. Process control
  • Set-points, feeding and analysis of historical run data

Who Should Attend

  • Biotechnologists and research scientists who are keen to explore the use of single use bioreactor technology for mammalian cell culture. Basic knowledge on bioprocess control is helpful.
 

Certificate and Assessment

A Certificate of Participation will be issued to participants who:

  • Attend 75% of the course
  • Undertake non-credit bearing assessment (during the course)

SkillsFuture Course Funding

To be eligible for the 70% training grant awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1.  Be a Singaporean Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident or LTVP+ Holder
  2.  Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy

To be eligible for the 90% enhanced subsidy awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1.  Be a Singaporean Citizen
  2.  Be at least 40 years old
  3.  Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SIT reserves the right to collect the balance of the programme fees (i.e. the potential grant amount) directly from the applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) should the above requirements not be fulfilled.

SIT reserves the right to make changes to published course information, including dates, times, venues, fees and instructors without prior notice.
