Data is constantly known bandied around a the “new oil” or “new cash”. This comes into sharp focus during the recent pandemic as companies are forced to go online from construction materials vendors to those  selling seafood in the wet markets. But underlying all this is how data is managed. The Government has introduced amendments to the Personal Data Protection Act (2012) to enable these digital marketing process but balanced with stronger protection against misuse. This course will take the participants through the nature of the a digital economy including how to manage these new amendments so as to enable the companies to compete in this new space: digital economy.

What You’ll Learn

  1. What is the role and importance of personal data in a digital economy
  2. What are the laws relevant to a digital economy, governing personal data protection in Singapore and in particular managing data breaches.
  3. What are some of the international legal regimes and their implications for companies operating beyond Singapore?

The topics covered include:
  1. Introduction to the digital economy and the role and importance of personal data management
  2. Key elements of the Personal Data Protection Act (2012) including the latest amendments passed by Parliament in 2020
  3. Related legal regimes and selected topics from Electronic Transactions Act, The Computer Misuse Act and Cyber Security Act and their roles in the eco-system that companies must know
  4. Introduction to cybersecurity and data security
  5. Personal Data protection policies and practices for a digital company
  6. How to construct data protection policies relevant to your companies

Who Should Attend

  • Directors of companies and senior management members responsible for cybersecurity, information technology, human resources, risk management, corporate compliance and finance; or
  • Information security, forensic investigators, analysts, auditors, accountants, and corporate compliance and risk management professionals


  • Any tertiary education including polytechnic graduates and the focus is on those in management or heads of operations. Not suitable for those with less than 4 years of work experience . Suitable for those converting to working in the digital economy.

Certificate and Assessment

A Certificate of Participation will be issued to participants who:

  • Attend at least 75% of the course
  • Undertake non-credit bearing assessment during the course

Is there any technical skill needed as pre-requisite?
  • No technical skill or pre-qualification is needed as there is no laboratory requirements
What is the assessments like?
  • The assessment will include a mixture of class presentation, case study report and tutorial participation.
What is the basic qualifications to apply?
  • As stated above
Can I apply if I have a Polytechnic Diploma?
  • Yes, but you will need to have at least 4 years of working experience.
Is this a part time or full time course
  • Thursday to Saturday
Must I be in the information technology industry to apply?
  • No, but you must be interested at least digital economy and legal regulations
Can I join the class just to audit without taking any assessment?
  • As SSG funding is available, all eligible participants are required to participate in the assessments
What will I obtain after attending this course?
  • Upon meeting the attendance requirements, a Certificate of Attainment (Non-Credit Bearing) in Digital Economy and Legal Requirements by Singapore Institute of Technology, will be awarded to participants who also passed the assessments. Otherwise, a Certificate of Participation will be awarded

SkillsFuture Funding

In order to be eligible for the 70% training grant awarded by SkillsFuture, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1. Be a Singaporean Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident
  2. Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy

To be eligible for the 90% enhanced subsidy awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1. Be a Singaporean Citizen
  2. Be at least 40 years old
  3. Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme
