Systems Engineering

Systems Engineering (SE) is a multi-disciplinary and integrative approach to enable the creation, utilization, and retirement of successful engineering systems. SE uses systems thinking, principles and concepts, as well as scientific, technological, and management methods that cut across different engineering disciplines to integrate and coordinate their collective efforts to engineer purposeful systems. 

The need to identify and manipulate the properties of a system as a whole that are greatly differ from the sum of the parts' properties motivated various industries to apply the SE discipline. When it was no longer possible to rely on individual engineering discipline to improve upon a system and existing tools were not sufficient to meet growing demands, SE was developed to address the complexity directly. The continuing evolution of SE comprises the development and identification of new methods and modeling techniques. These methods and techniques aid in a better comprehension of the design and developmental control of engineering systems as they grow more complex.


In 1990, a professional society for SE, the National Council on Systems Engineering (NCOSE), was founded by representatives from a number of U.S. corporations and organizations. NCOSE was created to address the need for improvements in SE practices and education. As a result of growing involvement from systems engineers outside of the U.S., NCOSE evolves to become International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) in 1995.

INCOSE aims to develop and disseminate the interdisciplinary principles and practices that enable the realization of successful systems. INCOSE is designed to connect SE professionals with educational, networking, and career-advancement opportunities in the interest of developing the global community of systems engineers and systems approaches to problems.

The Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP)

INCOSE as the internationally recognized community of knowledgeable, experienced, and skilled representatives provides confirmation of an individual’s expertise in the Systems Engineering through the CSEP programme. CSEP is a formal certification that provides conformation of an individual’s competency (demonstrated knowledge, education, and experience) in Systems Engineering. A key component of the CSEP programme is the Knowledge Examination that access an individual’s SE knowledge based on INCOSE’s Systems Engineering Handbook (SEH).

This Foundational CSEP Preparatory Course:

  1. elaborates on foundational SE concepts and principles; and
  2. provides guidance on acquiring the SE knowledge required for the CSEP Knowledge Examination.

What You’ll Learn

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • articulate fundamental concepts of systems engineering, systems thinking and system science;
  • apply fundamental concepts and principles of a system life cycle;
  • elaborate on the processes required for creating, using and retiring an engineered system;
  • describe processes that handle the organizational and project management aspects of systems engineering;
  • describes how systems engineering is applied;
  • describes methods that are used across life cycle stages; and
  • articulate the relationships between SE processes and specialized engineering domains.

Who Should Attend

  • Technical personnel in any engineering domain.


Degree/Diploma in Engineering or any other technical domain.

SkillsFuture Series Course Funding

In order to be eligible for the 70% training grant awarded by SkillsFuture, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1.  Be a Singaporean Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident
  2.  Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy

To be eligible for the 90% enhanced subsidy awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1.  Be a Singaporean Citizen
  2.  Be at least 40 years old
  3.  Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SIT reserves the right to collect the balance of the programme fees (i.e. the potential grant amount) directly from the applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) should the above requirements not be fulfilled.
