Overview

Systems thinking approaches complex problem solving with a collection of tools and methods based on the philosophy of system science. The practice of systems thinking makes us:

  • Sensitive to the circular nature of the world we live in
  • Aware of the role of structure in creating the conditions we face
  • Recognize that there are powerful systemic effects we are unaware of; and
  • Realize that there are consequences to our actions which are not obvious

By analysing problem deeply in a disciplined manner, systems thinking gives us a more complete and accurate picture of the problem to be solved before acting on it. It allows us to ask better questions before jumping to conclusions to create more satisfying, long-term solutions. This approach creates in us the willingness to see a situation more holistically, to recognise that we are interrelated and to acknowledge that there are often multiple interventions to a problem with different leverages.
