Overview

The application of rheological concepts in materials is increasingly important as industries and researchers alike seek to understand their products more deeply. By doing so, they are able to develop more effective and efficient products and processes.

Rheology is typically applied to:
  • Determine material functionality in product development
  • Determine product performance
  • Analyse microstructures
  • Evaluate texture by correlation to sensory data
  • Assess intermediate or final product quality control
  • Conduct shelf-life testing
  • Perform process engineering calculations involving equipment such as pumps, pipelines, extruders, rollers
This course will equip participants with the basic competencies:
  • To identify rheological properties of materials
  • To identify the test methods and geometries of the rheometer
  • To describe various rheological behaviour using common constitutive models
  • To recognise how rheology can be applied in product development and testing
A combination of theory, case studies and hands-on activities will enable participants to better apply the fundamentals of rheology to their daily applications.

  • Define concepts of stress, strain and strain rate (time)
  • Define concepts of solid, semi-solid and liquid
  • Identify the main equipment used to measure rheological properties of solid and fluid

Part II: Rheometer – test geometries and test methods

  • Basic workings of a rheometer
  • Common geometries used
  • Rotational flow tests and related constitutive models
  • Fitting of data to constitutive models using a spreadsheet
  • Oscillatory tests and viscoelastic properties
  • Additional test methods

Who Should Attend

Rheology is a characterisation tool that relates to products that are liquid, paste and soft solids and is therefore applicable across all industries. Nonetheless, typical ITMs that are involved in the development and production of these materials, particularly food manufacturing, energy & chemicals and healthcare, would be relevant.

This course will be suitable for practitioners who have started or intend to use rheometers in the following fields:
  • QA/QC
  • Research
  • Product development
  • Sales and marketing of technical products

Certificate and Assessment

A Certificate of Participation will be issued to participants who:

  • Attend 75% of the course
  • Undertake non-credit bearing assessment (during the course)

To be eligible for the 70% training grant awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1.  Be a Singaporean Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident or LTVP+ Holder
  2.  Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy

To be eligible for the 90% enhanced subsidy awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1.  Be a Singaporean Citizen
  2.  Be at least 40 years old
  3.  Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SIT reserves the right to collect the balance of the programme fees (i.e. the potential grant amount) directly from the applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) should the above requirements not be fulfilled.
