Parkinson’s disease results in substantial motor and non-motor symptoms which are disabling and distressing to the patient, family and society. This workshop provides participants with an evidence-based update on the understanding of the physiology of the movement disorders common in Parkinson’s, their assessments and management within a multidisciplinary setting. Physical, medical and psychological enablers and barriers to movement and mobility and strategies to overcome these barriers will be explored via lectures, practicals and case discussions.
The course seeks to provide course participants with advance knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of spasticity and its impact of the functional outcomes of patients. Additionally, the course teaches participants strategies to improve patients’ adherence to exercise programmes.
At the completion of the workshop, the following objectives will be achieved:

2) Parkinsonian subtypes and their medical management | Identify the various subtypes of Parkinson’s and discuss their medical management |
3) Physical assessment & management of Parkinson’s | Assess specific movement disorders in Parkinson’s |
4) Managing Falls and Fear of falling | Discuss falls intervention strategies and their efficacy |
5) Managing lack of motivation, mood and anxiety | Teach patients and caregivers mindfulness strategies to optimise movement and mobility |
6) Movement strategies training to improve movement and mobility in Parkinson’s | Teach patients and caregivers movement strategies to minimise freezing and optimise mobility |
7) Interprofessional clinical decision-making across the continuum of care | Discuss the holistic management of patients and caregivers across the various disease stages from interprofessional perspectives. These include physical, psychological, dietary, and pharmacological aspects. |
