Overview

All structures in realistic engineering systems are designed to resist vibrational forces caused by external or internal sources. With the advancements in technological processes and requirements for ultra-high precision, the amount of vibrations affecting system performance has to be significantly reduced. As such, it is important to comprehend, model, analyse, and control these vibrations. This module aims to cover the concept of structure vibration and control in physical systems. Using real world examples, various mathematical models, characteristics, performance, and stability of feedback control systems will also be introduced and evaluated. Furthermore, the effectiveness of controller design for proportional-integral-derivative controllers and appropriate compensators will be evaluated using Bode plots, root loci, and frequency response techniques. A case study on modeling and controlling vibrations of the voice coil motor in a commercial hard disk drive will also be discussed.

Pre-requisite

One year of relevant work experience, post-bachelor degree qualification, in the built environment or engineering industry.

Certificate and Assessment

A Certificate of Participation will be issued to participants who:
  • Attend 75% of the course
  • Undertake non-credit bearing assessment (during course)

A Certificate of Attainment for each module will be issued to participants who:

  • Attend at least 75% of each respective module; and
  • Participants who pass the Continuous Assessment

SkillsFuture Funding

To be eligible for the 70% training grant awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1. Be a Singaporean Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident
  2. Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy

To be eligible for the 90% enhanced subsidy awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1. Be a Singaporean Citizen
  2. Be at least 40 years old
  3. Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SIT reserves the right to collect the balance of the programme fees (i.e. the potential grant amount) directly from the applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) should the above requirements not be fulfilled.

SIT reserves the right to make changes to published course information, including dates, times, venues, fees and instructors without prior notice.

Course Series

Modular Certification Courses - Building Services Engineering 

These modules are stackable towards a Postgraduate Certificate in Building Services Engineering (PGCert BSE) or can be taken individually as a single module:

Modules

  • MEC6003 Construction Management using BIM
  • MEC6015 Project Management
  • MEC6017 Indoor Environmental Quality Engineering
  • MEC6018 Lighting Technology for Building Services
  • MEC6021 Structure Vibration and Control

Each module carries ECTS 6 credits. Candidates who pass any 4 modules (totalling 24 credits) with a CGPA of 2.5 or more will be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Building Services Engineering by SIT. All the above modules are subsidised by SkillsFuture Singapore. 
 

Effective Jan 2023, the above modules have been renamed from SIE60XX to MEC60XX. There is no change in their stackability towards the Postgraduate Certificate in Building Services Engineering.
