Overview

This 1.5-day workshop will focus on the management of patients with cervical disorders using a research-informed multimodal approach. The patient management is based on clinical reasoning within a biopsychosocial framework with consideration of the patients and their individual needs as well as the current research to inform practice. You will learn the theory and practice in the examination and management of cervical articular, neural, motor and sensorimotor systems as well as therapeutic exercise for the motor and sensorimotor systems. A multimodal approach to the management of cervical disorders including the need for preventative and self-management program will also be covered in this workshop.

Teaching Team

What You’ll Learn

  • Grasp a good overview of cervical disorders presenting to physiotherapists
  • Have a good understanding of the impairments in neuromuscular, kinematic and sensorimotor function which are associated with cervical musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Develop clinical skills for the recognition and retraining of neuromuscular control in patients with cervical musculoskeletal disorders
  • Develop clinical skills for the recognition and retraining of impairments in the sensorimotor control system in patients with cervical musculoskeletal disorders
  • Master the integrated management of the articular, muscle and nervous systems through a multimodal approach of patient education, manual therapy and specific therapeutic exercise techniques for patients with cervical musculoskeletal disorders

TopicsObjectives
Cervical spine disorders

Gain a broad knowledge of cervical spine disorders and clinical presentations in a biopsychosocial context.

Gain an appreciation of the burden of neck pain, its recurrent nature and implications for rehabilitation programs

Cervical kinematics, neuromuscular and sensorimotor systemsGain knowledge from research findings of the adverse effects of neck pain and injury on cervical kinematic, neuromuscular and sensorimotor function.
Assessment of patients with cervical spine disordersDevelop clinical skills for the assessment of kinematic dysfunction, neuromuscular and sensorimotorcontrol in patients with cervical musculoskeletal disorders
Management of impaired function in patients with cervical spine disorders

Develop clinical skills for research-informed training of kinematic, neuromuscular and sensorimotorfunction in patients with cervical musculoskeletal disorders

Develop clinical skills for the implementation of self-management programs and maintenance programs.

Integrated management of patients with cervical spine disordersDevelop a good understanding of the integrated management using a multimodal approach of patient education, manual therapy and specific therapeutic exercise techniques.
