Overview

Buildings, including industrial and commercial buildings, consume 45% of total electricity generation from the main grid or other local generations, leading to global warming and a significant high CO2 emission to the environment. Almost 50% of building energy consumption is attributed to air conditioning systems. In tropical region like Singapore, space cooling is essential for industrial or commercial buildings throughout the year to improve productivity, comfort level and indoor air quality. As chiller plants are essential part of the buildings and consume significant amount of energy, this module focuses on the fundamental of chiller plants and its associated components such as blowers, fans, piping network and ducting networks. Operation of chiller plant is also paramount to optimize the energy consumption in the buildings, and thus selection of chiller plays a considerable role in such energy efficient operation of the plant. In addition, water system and air system also contribute part of chiller plant’s energy efficiency.

This module focuses on the chiller plants and includes the following sub-topics:
  • Fundamental of Chiller plants and its associated components
  • Selection of chillers
  • Water side circulation system
  • Fundamental of Cooling towers and its operation
  • Chiller selection and chiller plant design consideration
  • Minimizing the energy consumption of Chiller plant.

Certificate and Assessment

A Certificate of Participation will be issued to participants who:
  • Attend 75% of the course
  • Undertake non-credit bearing assessment (during course)

A Certificate of Attainment for each module will be issued to participants who:

  • Attend at least 75% of each respective module; and
  • Participants who pass the Continuous Assessment
 

Prerequisites

  • Candidate should possess a post polytechnic diploma qualification.
  • Candidate must have at least two years of relevant working experience in the built environment, engineering, information technology industry.

Terms & Conditions:

SkillsFuture Funding

To be eligible for the 70% training grant awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1. Be a Singaporean Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident
  2. Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy

To be eligible for the 90% enhanced subsidy awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1. Be a Singaporean Citizen
  2. Be at least 40 years old
  3. Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SIT reserves the right to collect the balance of the programme fees (i.e. the potential grant amount) directly from the applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) should the above requirements not be fulfilled.

SIT reserves the right to make changes to published course information, including dates, times, venues, fees and instructors without prior notice.

Course Series

Modular Certification Courses - Building Services Design

These modules are stackable towards a Specialist Certificate in Building Services Design or can be taken individually as a single module as follows:

Modules

  • SIE1012 Engineering Drawing for Building Services
  • SIE2013 Sustainable Building Engineering
  • SIE2017 HVAC 1
  • SIE3018 HVAC2

Each module carries 5 credits. Candidates who pass all 4 modules (totalling 20 credits) with a CGPA of 2.0 or more will be awarded the Specialist Certificate in Building Services Design by SIT.
