Overview

This is the first module of a course consisting of three modules for preparing candidates for Specialist Registration Examination in Tunnel Engineering1.

The three modules are:
  • TE1 - Geology of Singapore and Tunnel Design
  • TE2 - Tunnelling Construction
  • TE3 - Tunnelling Operation and Impact Assessment
TE1 is not a prerequisite for TE2 and TE3. TE2 is not a prerequisite for TE3.

An aggregate certificate will be issued for completion and passing of all 3 courses.

The complete course will cover:
  • Legislations and Guidelines Related to Tunnel Engineering;
  • Codes and Standards Related to Tunnel Engineering;
  • Local Engineering Geology and Geotechnical Engineering;
  • Design and Construction of Bored Tunnelling Works;
  • Design and Construction of Complex Mining Works;
  • Tunnelling Instrumentation Monitoring and Interpretation Including Tunnelling Key Performance Indicators and Other Related Engineering Parameters;
  • Impact Assessment of Adjacent Buildings, Structures and Underground Utilities; and Other Relevant Areas in Tunnel Engineering.

  • Geology of Singapore
  • Identification and classification of rocks and soil
  • Mineralogy for igneous and sedimentary rocks
Rock and soil mechanics
  • Rock mechanics fundamentals; rock material properties; shear strengths and failure criteria; rock mass properties; Geological Strength Index (GSI); global strength of rock mass.
  • Soil mechanics fundamentals: Stress-paths, Stress-dilatancy, soil strength.
Rock mass classification
  • Rock mass classification; rock mass and rock material; primary factors in rock mechanics and rock engineering; mapping and description of rock joints and discontinuities; Rock Quality Designation; effects of ground water; in-situ stress; Rock Mass Rating (RMR); Rock Mass Quality (Q)
Site investigation and ground characterisation
  • Geological/geotechnical investigation methods; geophysical methods; in-situ and laboratory testing; Standards and codes of practice; Development of ground model; Predictive geology using site investigation information.
Case histories
  • Characteristics of various soils/rocks in Singapore; few case histories to illustrate how they affect tunnel construction; measures to deal with such material characteristics.
Segmental lining design
  • General Arrangement
  • Structural Design for both permanent and temporary loading
  • Waterproofing
  • Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete Segments
Cast in situ permanent lining design
  • Design of supports for reinforcements cage in mined tunnels
  • Design review of systematic formworks for mined tunnels
Sprayed concrete lining design
  • Sprayed concrete lining design including SFR shotcrete
  • Face stability
  • Waterproofing design (membrane type and spray membrane type)
Face pressure
  • Face pressure calculations for Mechanized Tunnelling
Review of design using numerical methods
  • Finite element method fundamentals
  • Lining analyses
  • Stability and serviceability

Who Should Attend

  • Registered Professional Engineers (Civil) who intend to take the course for the purpose of application as Specialist Professional Engineer in Tunnelling Engineering.
  • Persons who are involved in tunnel design or tunnel construction.

SkillsFuture Course Funding

To be eligible for the 70% training grant awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1. Be a Singaporean Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident
  2. Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy

To be eligible for the 90% enhanced subsidy awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
  1. Be a Singaporean Citizen
  2. Be at least 40 years old
  3. Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme

SIT reserves the right to collect the balance of the programme fees (i.e. the potential grant amount) directly from the applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) should the above requirements not be fulfilled.
