Overview

In view of the Phase Two (Heightened Alert) measures for Institutes of Higher Learning in relation to CET by MOE (16 May to 13 June 2021), this course will be conducted online.

This is the third module of a course consisting of three modules for preparing candidates for Specialist Registration Examinations in Tunnel Engineering1.

The three modules are:
  • TE1 - Geology of Singapore and Tunnel Design
  • TE2 - Tunnelling Construction
  • TE3 - Tunnelling Operation and Impact Assessment
TE1 is not a prerequisite for TE2 and TE3. TE2 is not a prerequisite for TE3.

An aggregate certificate will be issued for completion and passing of all 3 courses.

The complete course will cover: Theory and Application of Excavation Management System; Slurry quality and treatment for mechanized tunnelling; Planning of Tunnelling parameters (KPI); Soil Conditioning for EPB TBM; Case History for Mechanised and Conventional Tunnelling; Instrumentation & Monitoring for Mechanised and Conventional Tunnelling Works; Impact assessment & Mitigation Measures;Local regulatory requirements; and Mechanical & Electrical Systems of Tunnel Boring Machines. Contents specific to this module will be given in the section on “What You’ll Learn”.

    • Theoretical basis of Excavation Management System (EMS) based on Total
    • Volume, Total Mass, Dry Mass/Dry Volume.
    • Primary and secondary EMS for Slurry and EPB TBMs
    • Measuring devices (flowmeters, density meters) installation, calibration and how it affects the EMS.
    • Practical applications
  • Slurry quality and treatment for mechanized tunnelling
    • Primary and Secondary functions of slurry in tunnelling
    • Physical and Rheological properties of bentonite-based slurry and how they affect the slurry functions
    • Planning of slurry Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for different ground conditions and tunnelling operations
    • Slurry Treatment Plant Design (in-line, off-line), and understanding of STP flow diagrams.
  • Planning of Tunnelling parameters (KPI)
    • An overview on the planning of Tunnelling KPIs including consideration on deep tunnels VS shallow tunnels.
    • Calculation methods for Maximum Thrusts, Maximum Torque, Tail void pressure, primary grout volumes.
    • Planning for Cutterhead Interventions (CHI) with the aid of wear prediction methods
  • Soil Conditioning for EPB TBM
    • Materials used for soil conditioning in EPB tunnelling and performance requirements.
    • Testing methods for the evaluation of the suitability of foams.
    • Correlation between types of soil conditioning and different types of ground conditions.
    • Risks and mitigation measures related to soil conditioning in difficult ground conditions.
  • Case History for Mechanised and Conventional Tunnelling
  • Instrumentation & Monitoring for Mechanised and Conventional Tunnelling Works
    • Common types of instruments and how they work
    • Minimum monitoring requirements for tunnelling works
    • Special Monitoring Scenario (TBM launch & Initial Drive, Cutter Head Intervention, Mining/SCL)
    • Review Levels and Interpretation of Data
    • Regulatory Requirements
  • Impact assessment & Mitigation Measures
    • Estimating adjacent structure movements, including influence of building stiffness.
    • Damage classification and potential to cause building damage
    • Approach and framework for building impact assessment
    • Establishing allowable movement limits for buildings and defining monitoring review levels.
    • Mitigation Measures such as strengthening, underpinning, groundwater control, and other mitigation and contingency measures
  • Local regulatory requirements
  • Mechanical & Electrical Systems of Tunnel Boring Machines
    • Design objectives and considerations
    • Installation and operation of supporting mechanical and electrical systems for the TBM
  • Requirements for Factory Acceptance Testing and Site Acceptance Testing
