Overview
Ultrasound is a valuable tool in the diagnosis and management of many acute and chronic diseases. It involves the use of high-frequency ultrasound waves to produce diagnostic quality images. Ultrasound practitioners require highly developed technical skills and a good understanding in the areas of health science, physics, anatomy and pathology for examination of body parts.
This 2-day workshop aims to provide you with the fundamental theoretical knowledge and skills in the ultrasound physics and instrumentation that will support your learning and practice in the diagnostic ultrasound field. Simulation scanning and showing the function of the controls of the ultrasound machine will facilitate the application of knowledge learnt to practice.
What You’ll Learn
Basic Principles of Ultrasound Physics
- Define the properties and understand the parameters of waves including; acoustic velocity, wavelength, frequency, period and amplitude
- Understand the range of diagnostic range of frequencies
Ultrasound Production
- Understand how the piezoelectric effect generates pulses of ultrasound
- Identify the different components and types of transducers
- Understand the factors affecting the production of sound and its effect on the final image
Ultrasound Transmission
- Understand the different interactions of ultrasound with tissues
- Describe the effect of tissue impedance on acoustic velocity and its impact on the amount of sound reflection at different tissue boundaries
- Understand the ways to reduce ultrasound beam attenuation
Ultrasound Beam and Resolution
- Identify the ultrasound beam shape and the intensity distribution within the different areas of the beam including the focusing effect
- Understand the types of resolutions and its effect on the ultrasound image
- Define pre-processing and post-processing functions
- Know the options of image manipulation using recent advances in ultrasound imaging technology such as harmonic imaging, speckle reduction etc
Different Modes of Ultrasound
- Understand different modes of ultrasound and able to apply them according to the type of diagnostic ultrasound information required
- Describe the Doppler effect
- State the Doppler equation and describe how each component may be influenced while sampling
Hands-on Practical Session
- This session aims to allow participants to use different types of transducers for different scans and to understand the functions of the different controls on the ultrasound machine. They will be able to appreciate how each control affects the final ultrasound image quality.
Revision
- This activity will include Q & A sessions and to clarify any doubts that the participants have on understanding the ultrasound physical principles and instrumentation before moving on to optimising the production of ultrasound images.
Who Should Attend
- Radiographers, residents or other allied health professionals practising in ultrasound
- Clinicians and general practitioners who want to utilise diagnostic ultrasound in their practice
Certificate and Assessment
A Certificate of Participation will be issued to participants who:
- Attend 75% of the workshop
- Undertake non-credit bearing assessment (during the workshop)
