Electric motors are the workhorse for industry. Advances in power electronics and the use of modern control technology have transformed the application areas of motor-driven systems. In combination with power electronics, induction motors that are used traditionally for fixed-speed applications are increasingly used as variable-frequency drives (VFD) in process control and automation. VFDs also offer important energy saving opportunities in operation of fans, pumps and compressors. Permanent magnet synchronous motor drive that offers high operating efficiency is the new generation of traction drive for Singapore’s MRT system. Operation of VFD can cause undesirable effects on power quality and EMI which must be considered and mitigated at the project design stage.
This course is intended to familiarize the participants with the performance and application aspects of industrial motors and variable speed drives. It provides a comprehensive review of the major types of industrial drives and the technologies in use today. At the end of the course, participant should be able to select drives for their particular applications and to operate and maintain their existing drives

SkillsFuture Funding
In order to be eligible for the 70% training grant awarded by SkillsFuture, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
- Be a Singaporean Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident
- Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme
SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy
To be eligible for the 90% enhanced subsidy awarded, applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) must:
- Be a Singaporean Citizen
- Be at least 40 years old
- Not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the actual grant disbursed for the programme
SIT reserves the right to collect the balance of the programme fees (i.e. the potential grant amount) directly from the applicants (and/or their sponsoring organisations where applicable) should the above requirements not be fulfilled.
